New Leisure Facilities For Meadowhall

New Leisure Facilities For Meadowhall

The Meadowhall shopping complex in Sheffield is set for an extension to the existing leisure hall, Insider Media reports. The proposals, known as the Meadowhall Masterplan project, have been submitted by British Land, and have been recommended for approval by Sheffield City Council.

Meadowhall, which is sited three miles northeast of Sheffield, is the largest indoor shopping centre in Yorkshire, and the 11th largest in the UK. If the planned goes ahead, this would make it the fourth largest shopping centre. It opened in 1990, on the site of a former steelworks.

The new project will see the expansion of the 11-screen multiplex cinema, and the creation of extra retail space. The current training academy, The Source, is also earmarked for a change of use, to a mixed-use area. The plans were first submitted in 2019, but have since been scaled back.

The report submitted by British Land said: “The applicant has demonstrated a site-specific case for Meadowhall to widen its leisure and food and drink offer in order to compete with other regional centres and to meet customers’ needs.

It continued: “It has also shown that there are significant economic and employment benefits from the development in respect of the continued success of Meadowhall – which employs a considerable number of people and attracts spending and visitors from outside the area.”

“Also, employment and economic development benefits will arise directly and indirectly from the construction and operation of the development.”

The report authors suggest that the scheme could generate an extra 850 jobs for the local area, plus an uplift of £71.5 million for the local economy. The application will be considered by the council planning and highway committee and will be subject to conditions.

The report added: “Whilst there are concerns about the impact of the proposal on the vitality and viability of existing centres, in terms of the effect of the development in making Meadowhall a more attractive place to visit at the potential expense of trips to city and town centres…”

“…the balance of quantitative and qualitative evidence is considered to indicate that the proposals are unlikely to have a significant adverse impact on the vitality and viability of any existing city, town or district centre, including Sheffield city centre and Rotherham town centre.”

Meadowhall has been blamed by some commentators for the decline of both Sheffield and Rotherham centres, as it has drawn shoppers out of town.

The shopping centre is very well connected, being served by stops on the Sheffield Supertram Network, and a railway station. There is also a large bus station. Collectively, the terminals are known as the Meadowhall Interchange, and it is the only shopping centre in the country which is connected via a national bus, tram, and train interchange.

The centre is also easily accessible by car from junction 31 of the M1, and there is also a park and ride scheme.
