Plans For Energy Storage Hub In South Yorkshire

Plans have been submitted by Banks Group to develop an energy storage hub in South Yorkshire. ReNews reports that the proposed site at Thorpe Marsh near Doncaster was formerly the site of a power station. The new large scale facility has the potential to store up to 2.8GWhrs of energy.

Banks Group specialise in renewable energy and minerals, and they have stated that the new storage hub would be used to back up the electricity supply to the national grid during times of peak demand. An initial consultation process has already been undertaken to gather the views of local residents.

The proposals highlight the economic and social benefits of the development, such as the creation of new jobs and the potential to attract other investment to the area. Banks Group has also pledged to carry out mitigation measures to enhance the local environment, including the development of wetlands, woodlands, and biodiverse grasslands.

Lewis Stokes, senior community relations manager at The Banks Group, said: “This is a nationally significant scheme that will put South Yorkshire at the forefront of developments in the increasingly important energy storage industry, and we’re excited to have reached this stage in its realisation.”

He added: “The response we’ve had to our ideas from local people, businesses and community leaders so far has been very encouraging and we’ll continue to speak with as many people as we can in the coming months about everything that this project would deliver.”

“The Thorpe Marsh Green Energy Hub would utilise the site’s large grid capacity to facilitate the increased deployment of homegrown renewable energy technologies on the National Grid network, so that more of the energy we all use in our homes, businesses, schools and hospitals can be generated via our own renewable means and less from unreliable sources overseas.”

Banks Group plan to reinstate the existing railway line to the site if the plans are approved, to avoid putting extra traffic pressure on the local roads. If successful, the developers hope that the work will be fully completed within five years.

Meanwhile, Insider Media reports that a dilapidated building in Hull is to be transformed into a technology training and upskilling hub. The work is going ahead thanks to a grant of £186,153 from the Levelling Up Funding scheme.

Councillor Paul Drake-Davis, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “This Levelling Up Fund grant for The Edge Hub will again help breathe new life into an empty, redundant building in the city and support an exciting project to help deliver skilled professionals to Hull’s burgeoning digital and tech sector.”

He added: “The Levelling Up Funding scheme continues to benefit many buildings and businesses in the city and this is another great example of this.”

The money will go towards the general modernisation of the interior of the building, and the addition of accessible features. New computer equipment will be installed in the training rooms, and the front exterior of the building will be smartened up.
