Green Light For Leeds South Bank Development

Build-to-rent developers PLATFORM_ have been granted planning permission to develop an area of the South Bank in Leeds with new apartments and commercial space. Insider Media reports that the £500m mixed use development will take up eight acres and will provide 1.3 million sq ft of new residential and commercial space.

Jean-Marc Vandevivere, chief executive at PLATFORM_, said: "The green light from Leeds City Council is the news that we have been waiting for, and we are incredibly pleased that we can now progress with our development which is set to become one of the most desirable residential and office communities in the city.”

He added: "We're extremely excited about turning this site that has lain derelict for too long into a thriving neighbourhood supporting Leeds City Council's goals of delivering new homes across the city and continuing the rapid regeneration of the South Bank area of Leeds.”

"This will be PLATFORM_'s largest development yet, taking our portfolio to 4,000 apartments and value of over £1bn as we continue to add further BTR opportunities across the UK."

The scheme will include 1,350 build to rent apartments, plus amenities including a gym, a co-working space, dining areas, children’s play areas, and landscaped gardens. The buildings will be designed to meet high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability.

Meanwhile, Leeds was well represented at the MIPIM Property Conference that took place in Cannes this March. Delegates from Leeds City Council and The Northern Powerhouse Partnership attended the conference to promote the investment opportunities in the city, including the Leeds Innovation Arc across the city centre.

A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said Leeds was "well placed for the current and future drivers of growth in key sectors including digital, data, creative industries, health and life sciences".

They added: "Leeds has always been an outward looking global city and we continue to share best practice, exchange ideas, connect with other international cities and promote the opportunity our city represents to investors, talent and companies. To this end, we achieved our primary MIPIM objectives.”

Henri Murison, chief executive of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, commented: "The city regions of the Northern Powerhouse together represent a world-class investment opportunity - a whole that is greater than the sum of our individual parts."

He added: "There were some fascinating conversations about innovation districts and our pan-Northern strengths in sectors such as health and life sciences.”

"It was clear that private sector investment has a significant role to play in addressing inequalities between North and South. Thanks to all our partners including Addleshaw Goddard, Arup, Atkins, Arcadis, Bruntwood and Munroe K as well as to our wider members, who all continue to do so much to promote the North."

The representatives showcased the progress Leeds has made with an inclusive housing delivery programme, and efforts to unify universities, hospitals, cultural venues, and technology businesses across the city. About 90 countries and some 23,000 delegates attended the event in Cannes.
