Post-Brexit Visa Rules ‘Need Clarification’

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has called on the government to provide clarity over the post-Brexit visa rules for migrant workers.

With the release of the government’s Brexit White Paper have come a slew of questions from many industries in the UK.

The construction sector currently relies heavily on skilled workers from the EU and is concerned about a skills shortage should such workers be unable to obtain visas to work in the UK once the country officially leaves the European Union.

As a result, FMB chief executive Brian Berry has called on the government to provide more clarity over new rules on migration, noting that it’s vital to provide more details to “minimise the risk of uncertainty clouding people’s decision-making and spending plans”.

“For the many construction SMEs who are currently facing severe skills shortages, the certainty they need is that access to skilled EU workers will not be drastically cut off,” he stated.

Mr Berry also pointed out that nine per cent of construction workers in the UK are from the EU, rising to almost one-third in London. He stressed that, even with access to EU workers, many construction firms are facing a skills shortage and are unable to hire employees with the skills they need to keep up with the government’s house building targets.

Last month the government announced that it would provide £22 million to help boost skills in the construction industry and help alleviate the shortage that the sector is currently facing.
