New Construction Challenges Launched In UK

Two new construction challenges have been launched by the UK government. UK Research and Innovation will be providing up to £36 million in funding across the two challenges.

Both of the competitions focus on modern methods of construction, with £10 million being made available to businesses taking a collaborative approach to research and development in this area.

To participate in this competition, the cost of any submitted scheme should be between £150,000 and £1.5 million, Building reported. The news provider also noted that the schemes need to “improve productivity, quality and performance of the UK construction industry”.

A further £26 million will be made available under the second challenge, which relates to demonstrator projects for modern methods of construction, digital and whole-life asset performance.

The aim of this competition is to provide investment to around 10 world-leading demonstrators that are able to show the “application of approaches, deployed at scale, that aim to improve all aspects of a built asset’s lifecycle,” Specification Online revealed.

Both competitions will open later this month, on 28 August 2019, and are set to close on 30 October this year.

Earlier this month, Planning and Building Control (PBC) Today shared an article by Ian Atkinson and Ryan Lavers of law firm Womble Bond Dickinson, which explored how modern methods of construction are impacting the UK’s building industry.

They noted that these methods are particularly well suited to volume housebuilding, while the education sector has also been benefitting from the reduced amount of time it takes to construct projects using modern methods of construction.
