Scaffolding in Leeds, Elliott Hudson College

Scaffolding in Leeds, Elliott Hudson College

Elliott Hudson College is a thriving sixth form in the Beeston area of Leeds, part of the Gorse Academies Trust. The college offers 36 A-Level courses for up to 1000 students, and has a partnership with Cambridge University.  In 2017, work began on the construction of a new building, with an estimated cost of £11.1 million. Burflex were chosen to supply the scaffolding for the entire project.

The new college building replaced two older sixth form buildings of the trust’s existing academies, in Morley and Farnley, allowing the college to be brought together under one roof. The new location is less than half a mile away from the old college buildings, and boasts state-of-the-art design.

The architect is Bond Bryan, and the engineering services are provided by BAM Design, who have an extensive track record in the education sector, and particularly within Yorkshire. Burflex Scaffolding were contracted to work alongside BAM Construction on the project.

The site, a former data centre located on the White Rose Office Park, Leeds, was substantially refurbished as part of the plan. Formerly known as Phoenix House, the 40,000 sq ft (3,7000 sq m) office and laboratory complex was originally built for the Environment Agency.

The existing roof was overlayed and the building was stripped back to a shell before new perimeter glazing was added.  According to BBC news, Adam Varley, of commercial property consultant LSH, said the deal was the “biggest of its kind in the city for three years.”  The end result provided a college that was both fit-for-purpose and visually pleasing.

The college is now a popular and successful academic community, rated as “Outstanding” across all areas in the most recent Ofsted inspection. Burflex are proud to have been involved in this project, which has improved the educational experiences of many young people in the Leeds area.

Scaffolding in Grimsby, Cartergate Office Development

Cartergate Office Development is a new-build 4 storey office development in Grimsby. Commissioned by North East Lincolnshire County Council, the design and build project was awarded to Gelder Group. Burflex were proud to be contracted as the scaffolding supplier.

The ground floor consists of lettable retail units, whilst the upper floors contain open-plan offices with communal break-out areas, and a roof terrace. The overall design made use of both traditional and modern methods.  The materials include modern glazed curtain walling, zinc Rainscreen Cladding, and polished Forticrete blockwork.

The £6 million development was officially opened by the Mayor of Grimsby on the 2nd February, 2017. Previous to the construction, the area was derelict, and the new investment is leading the cultural regeneration of the Cartergate area of the town.

Alongside the building, improvements were made to the surrounding areas, including highways, footpaths and carparks.

The solicitor firm Wilkin Chapman have made Cartergate House their Grimsby headquarters, with approximately 213 employees working there. The interior is designed to high specifications, resulting in stylish and high-quality offices which have helped to rejuvenate a formerly neglected area.
