Construction Work Starts On Next Phase Of Riverside Development

A Leeds-based construction company has announced that it has begun work on the next phase of a £50 million riverside development.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that JM Construction will be creating 95 apartments in two former mills during this phase of the Victoria Riverside residential development in Hunslet, in south Leeds.

The work will comprise of a combination of new build and sympathetic conversion of part of the former grade II and grade II* listed Hunslet and Victoria flax spinning mills, and is expected to be completed by November 2021.

The full scheme will extend to 356 units across seven individual mills, creating a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as spectacular rooftop penthouses. The phased delivery plan is scheduled for completion in 2023.

The former mill site, based off Goodman Street in Hunslet, was purchased by JM Construction in 2017 for an undisclosed sum.

John Mulleady, managing director of JM Construction, said: “We are privileged to have the opportunity to breathe new life into the site and refurbish the derelict mill buildings which were on the brink of demolition.

“They form part of the rich history of the city when it was once a world leader in textile manufacturing and through our sympathetic conversion will be enjoyed by future generations.”

The plans for the mills, vacated 40 years ago by tool-making firm RH Bruce, form part of the Leeds South Bank project, which the council hopes will. Rate new developments that will effectively double the size of the city centre, creating 35,000 jobs and 8,000 new homes over the next 15 years.
