Work Begins On New Institute Of Technology

Work has commenced on a new Institute of Technology at East Riding College’s Flemingate campus in Beverley, near Hull.

Insider Media reports that the facility will be created from a single-storey extension, and it will be one of only 12 similar institutes in the UK.

The facility will be home to high-level specialist training for engineering, designed to close the skills gap in key STEM areas while providing employers with skilled candidates.

The £2.1 million investment has been buoyed by £500,000 in support from the government’s Local Growth Fund, secured by the Humber LEP and part of the government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse.

A groundbreaking event was held by William Birch & Sons Ltd and East Riding College, and the development is scheduled to be completed for summer 2021.

Mike Welsh, principal at East Riding College, said he was pleased to mark the beginning of a new phase of development at the institute.

“It is part of the high-profile government investment in an Institute of Technology for Yorkshire and the Humber, and we have worked with college and university partners from across the region to make this happen,” he added.

Gemma Shahjahan, director at principal contractor William Birch & Sons, said: “We can see the advantages that such a facility will bring to the region, and higher-level STEM training in construction, engineering and technical professions is obviously something that is close to our heart, as it brings benefits to our industry and to our region.”
