Leeds-Bradford Airport Decision Put On Hold

Leeds-Bradford Airport Decision Put On Hold

A decision on the proposed expansion of Leeds-Bradford Airport has been put on hold as communities secretary Robert Jenrick has stated he needs further time to consider the submissions by objectors seeking a public enquiry into the plan.

If it goes ahead, the £150 million plan to construct a new terminal building will create 850 construction jobs, with scaffolders in Leeds likely to be among those gaining orders.

However, as with any expansion of airports, the plan has met with opposition from environmental campaigners opposed to increases in air travel.

Bosses at Leeds Bradford Airport have said the new terminal building is not part of any expansion of the airport, as the capacity is already in place to have more flights. Instead, they argue, the new building will actually help reduce the airport’s carbon footprint because it meets the highest BREEAM excellence standards, which would make it the greenest terminal building in Britain.

The plans, which have already been approved by Leeds City Council, would see the existing terminal being demolished and the three-storey, 34,000 sq ft building being constructed on a different part of the airport site. A stated aim of the project is also to ensure the ground operations are carbon neutral by 2023.

Mr Jenrick’s decision does not mean a public enquiry is certain by any means. It is possible he may consider all the submissions but opt against calling one, as he did in the recent case of a new football stadium for Everton, located in Liverpool’s northern docklands. This was despite objections from UNESCO and other heritage bodies.

The terminal development is not the only construction project proposed regarding the airport, as there are also plans for the construction of a new Leeds-Bradford Airport Parkway station. This would be located on the existing line from Leeds to Harrogate between Horsforth Station and the Bramhope Tunnel.
