£3.6m Refurbishment For Leeds Bus Station

A contract has been awarded to Willmott Dixon Interiors for a £3.6m refurbishment of Leeds bus station. The fit-out specialists were appointed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Business Live reports.

The 36-week upgrade plan will provide modern facilities, and improved accessibility for passengers. The station concourse is to be refitted with durable wall and flooring finishes, and the lighting and roof ventilation will be replaced. There will also be new seating areas for passengers, and digital signage and information boards.

The existing drivers’ accommodation will be relocated, and the travel centre will be refurbished and made open to the concourse. To the exterior of the station, the entrance canopies will be replaced with larger, better designed versions, and new signage will be added.

A ramp and steps will be added to the York Street entrance, and new wall cladding will be installed to increase the visibility of the station. The bus station, travel centre, retail units, and the adjoining National Coach Station will remain in operation throughout the refurbishment, with up to six bays being taken out of use at any one time.

Phil Crowther, regional director at London-headquartered Willmott Dixon Interiors, said: “We know just how important a role Leeds Bus Station plays in serving local communities, so it’s vital that it remains at full capacity for passengers during construction.

He added: “We’ve carefully designed and planned these works to minimise disruption to bus and coach movements and will be carrying out overnight operations for approximately 12 weeks, to maintain power to the facility.”

Mr Crowther emphasised that measures would be in place to ensure the safety of the public at all times. In addition to Wilmott Dixon, the project will engage the services of Enjoy Design Ltd as architect, and Waterman Building Services as structural engineer.
