Funding Secured For Humber Green Jet Fuel Refinery

Funding Secured For Humber Green Jet Fuel Refinery

The progress of the green jet fuel refinery on the South Humber Bank has received another boost, as £2.4m of funding has been secured from a government fund. Business Live reports that the plans for a refinery development across the Port of Immingham, which have been proposed by Velocys Plc, were among the funding winners.

The proposed development, known as Altalto, was successful in the Green Fuels, Green Skies Competition, which was run by the Department for Transport (DfE), as part of the government’s Ten Point Plan. Its aim was to support UK companies who have innovative technology for the conversion of household and wood waste into sustainable aviation fuel.

The competition was part of a wider drive to further the production of green and sustainable fuels, in order to meet ambitious targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The government passed a new law in April, with a target to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035, compared to 1990 levels.

Henrik Wareborn, Velocys chief executive, said: “We are very pleased to have this enhanced level of support from the Department for Transport for the Altalto project. The momentum for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the UK and around the world is growing, demonstrated here by the recent consultations on the path to net zero aviation and on a SAF mandate.”

Velocys have already received £1.2m of funding towards the £350m development, with a further £1.4m to come subject to policy development progress. Once fully commissioned, the site will be able to convert hundreds of thousands of tonnes of residual waste into SAF.

The plant project is a collaboration with British Airways, who are committed to powering 10 percent of flights with SAF by 2030. The scheme is expected to create hundreds of highly skilled new jobs in the area.
