A Leeds developer has submitted plans to regenerate a disused brownfield in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Business Live reports that Harron Homes Yorkshire propose to redevelop the site, which has stood empty for 50 years, with 236 new homes.
The developers are known for building luxury houses throughout Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire since 1992. The site in Barnsley will feature a mixture of two, three, and four-bedroom homes, which will have electric vehicle charging points built into the infrastructure.
Tony Lee, managing director of Harron Homes Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to have submitted a planning application for this new development. We are hopeful that our plans will rejuvenate this derelict site while maintaining the rich variety of wildlife which calls this site home, and bring much needed homes to the Barnsley area.”
The Barnsley Chronicle reports that previous proposals for the site have been turned down by planners, as the character of the land was ‘poorly suited to residential development.’ Another proposal was apparently refused because of concerns over increased traffic congestion around the site, and the extra pressure placed on local services.
Harron Homes appear to address the concerns of conservationists, by incorporating various ecological measures into their plans, and in particular the Dob Sike waterway which is of historical significance.
The Dob Sike area contains ancient woodland and other environmentally sensitive features which will be preserved and enhanced. Areas of wildflower meadows, birch oak woodlands, and other wildlife habitats will be created and maintained.
In addition, the developer is set to enhance the local area with picnic spots and green open spaces, nature trails, footpaths, and play areas. There was no mention of how any extra traffic might impact on the local area, however.
