Firm Appointed For West Yorkshire British Library Development

Wates Construction has been appointed as the pre-construction stage partner for the redevelopment of the British Library site at Boston Spa between Leeds and York in West Yorkshire.

Insider Media reports that the 45-week pre-consultation services consultant (PCSC) role will see the 125-year old construction firm working with the client’s design team up to RIBA Stage 4 with services engineer, Buro Happold and London-based, architectural practice, Carmody Groarke.

The planned scheme will involve the construction of a new 28-metre high, 5274 square metre, fully automated net-zero carbon archive facility for the library.

The building will feature a public viewing gallery, and over 220 km of additional shelf space, as well as the renovations of the 1970s Brutalist-style Urquhart Building for the library’s 550-strong workforce. There will also be a new reading room, restaurant, and cafe for visitors to the library.

David Wingfield, regional director North East, Wates Construction, said the firm was ‘delighted’ with the appointment, and added that the firm has a proven track record for successfully completing similar airtight buildings.

“This project will set the standard for facilities of this type worldwide. Nothing like this archive has been built in the UK before, where the environment is completely airtight, and when complete, a fully automated racking and robotics system will be used to retrieve documents.”

Wingfield said that the project was ‘fascinating and challenging’, and required cutting-edge sustainable design solutions to maintain the facility’s ‘novel, world-beating status’.

He added that the appointment is ‘a highly-coveted role for any contractor to secure.’
