Second Development For Scunthorpe Vertical Farm Start-Up

Vertical farming entrepreneur James Lloyd-Jones, who began his business venture in Scunthorpe, is expanding to a new site in Gloucestershire. Jones Food Company has already started work on the 148,000 sq ft site in Linley, Business Live reports.

The original site in Scunthorpe was built in 2019, after Lloyd-Jones was inspired by watching a feature on hydroponics on TV show Tomorrow’s World. Despite having no previous experience in the sector, he arranged to talk with expert agronomists and carried out research in Japan. This led to the securing of multi-million-pound funding from Ocado.

The second site in Gloucestershire will have growing space which is the equivalent of 70 tennis courts, which will make it the world’s largest vertical farm. Lloyd-Jones hopes to relieve the current pressures on the UK supply chain, by supplying thousands of tonnes of fresh produce to UK supermarkets.

Lloyd-Jones commented: “With this new facility we further accelerate Britain’s position as a world-leader when it comes to vertical farming.”

“We already supply thousands of British retail stores with basil grown in our first facility in Lincolnshire but this new site, which is three times bigger, will allow us to supply tens of thousands more stores and to widen our product offer with our partners.”

According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), vertical farms are a sustainable alternative to traditional farming methods. While the technology is still in its infancy, there is the potential for it to boost production, reduce pollution, and save space.

The crops are grown in vertical and stacked layers, with artificially controlled lighting, temperature, and air quality. These methods reduce or eliminate the need for chemicals and pesticides, resulting in healthier foods. The crops also require less water, and because they are not reliant on the season or weather conditions, they produce more consistently.

Many people believe that vertical farming will be the only way to provide healthy and good quality food for future generations.
