Construction Begins On £100m Housing Scheme

Residential development contractor Wilmott Dixon has commenced work for Doncaster Council on three new housing schemes across the borough and is part of the next phase of the Council House Building Programme.

PCB Today reports that a total of 33 affordable homes will be available when the project is completed in January 2023. The project, which has been procured via SCAPE, a public sector procurement authority, includes the building of:

  • 21 two to four-bedroom houses on Adwick Lane, Toll Bar
  • Seven two to three-bedroom houses on Appleby Road, Intake
  • Five two to three-bedroom houses on Athlestane Crescent, Edenthorpe.

All three sites form part of Doncaster Council’s new £100 million housebuilding programme that was approved earlier this year by Mayor Ros Jones, along with a new housing strategy. The new social housing developments will be a mix of bungalows and family homes.

Nick Heath, director at Willmott Dixon, said the firm was ‘excited’ that work had begun on the project in the borough at the ‘three unique sites’.

“After working with the council to deliver over 400 new homes in recent years, we have built strong relationships in the area and continue to help meet the growing housing needs of the local community,” he said.

Heath added that throughout the project, the firm will generate £444,000 in social value through initiatives that aim to enhance social, economic, and environmental wellbeing, for instance, charity work, apprenticeships for young people, and improving energy efficiency standards.

Councillor Glyn Jones, deputy mayor and cabinet member for housing and business, said he was delighted to see the new programme of house building commence.

He said that building better quality homes for the people of Doncaster was a ‘fundamental element’ of the council’s Housing Strategy and Council Homes Delivery Plan, and seeing the work get underway on the three developments was ‘excellent news’.

“We have had a superb record for delivering new council homes in recent years and this commitment is continuing with more than 500 new homes planned over the next five years,” he said.

Cllr Jones added that the homes will include the latest in energy-saving features and innovations needed to address the climate change crisis, as well as being constructed to meet the needs and wants of residents.

“We are leading the way on high standards on the council homes building front.”

Mark Robinson, group chief executive at SCAPE, added that there is a widely reported shortage of affordable housing in the UK and that the current hoisting stock is responsible for 40 per cent of the country’s carbon emissions.

“We are proud to be helping accelerate the new energy-efficient homes via SCAPE Construction, a direct award framework designed to drive collaboration, efficiency, time and cost savings for Doncaster Council which will be delivered by Willmott Dixon.”

Robinson added that the addition of the new houses will help Doncaster Council achieve its net-zero ambitions while delivering tangible social value through the project.
