£5.4m Housing Development Announced For Barnsley

Barnsley will be given an upgrade once £5.4 million worth of houses, bungalows and apartments are complete.

Earlier this week, Barnsley Council revealed it has chosen Esh Construction as the contractor for the mixed scheme, with work due to commence in the new year.

The council-owned site is located two miles from the town centre in Monk Bretton, providing new properties for private sale, private rent and social rent.

Divisional director of Esh Construction Stuart Leslie said the project was a sign of the business’ growth in the Yorkshire region, noting that it is the first new build housing scheme Barnsley Council has chosen the firm for.

“As a local contractor, we will aim to maximise the social and economic benefits to the community by procuring a local supply chain, employing a local workforce and delivering key social value initiatives in the area. We are excited to get work underway,” said Mr Leslie.

While the contract was originally agreed by planners a year ago in December 2020, it has taken 12 months to get things off the ground. Now, Esh Construction intends to commence work on the site in January 2022, and hopes the first new properties will be available for residents to move into from spring the following year.

The development will include 24 two–, three– and four-bedroom houses, as well as seven two-bedroom bungalows and four two-bedroom apartments.

As part of the initiative, it will offer affordable housing and private rented homes in the area, helping the local authority keep to its housing strategy.

Barnsley Council’s cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture Councillor Tim Cheetham emphasised this promise, saying: “One of the key ambitions we’ve set out in our vision for Barnsley as the Place of Possibilities is that people have a wider choice of quality, affordable and sustainable housing, to suit their needs and lifestyle.”

He added: “I’m delighted we’re now able to get moving on these exciting new homes which will help us achieve that ambition.”

In order to complete the project, Esh Construction will work in conjunction with Jefferson Sheard Architects and MJM Consulting Engineers. Together, they will also provide a new access road and associated external works necessary for a housing development of this size.

The construction firm is well-placed to deliver this job, having completed several large housing schemes in the past across northern England.

It has recently been announced as the chosen firm to build 28 new bungalows in South Bank in Middlesbrough.

The properties, which have been designed by HMH Architects, will form part of a larger housing led regeneration programme in the north-eastern area to provide adequate accommodation for the ageing population.

They will replace terraced houses that were taken down more than a decade ago, giving homes to local people in the area and marking the start of a £3.7 million redevelopment scheme in South Bank.

Gary Dobson, divisional director for Esh Construction, stated the scheme “will provide much-needed housing and a community where people can enjoy living in later life”.
