Major Milestone Reached On Sheffield Community Stadium Construction

After 11 months of construction, the most recent phase of construction works for the Community Stadium in Sheffield has been completed.

The final piece of roof cladding for the covered grandstand has been lifted and secured into place by scaffolders in Sheffield, completing one of the centrepiece buildings for Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and keeping on track for a February 2022 handover date.

Constructed as part of an initiative to create an Olympic legacy after the success of the 2012 games in London, the Community Stadium was part of the next phase of works to provide an improved sports infrastructure and world-class facilities for athletes at all levels.

The initial site was acquired from Sheffield City Council in 2018, but the planned start date for construction was delayed due to circumstances that forced a delay in the construction industry as a whole.

As well as this, there were other off-field concerns that risked the completion of the stadium, with a court case disputing the ownership of Sheffield United Football Club, which led to fears that one of the parties involved, a main investor of the Olympic Legacy Park, would pull out of the project.

Despite this, the Community Stadium’s structural works were completed ahead of schedule, with only the internal fit-out of the common areas and facilities left to complete before the final handover and opening.

The grandstand will hold up to 3,900 spectators, with 18,000 square feet of conference and business space available as well.

It is set to be the home of the Sheffield Eagles, a rugby league club that plays in the Betfred Championship, the second tier of English rugby.

The Eagles currently already play in the Olympic Legacy Park, but the new Community Stadium doubles the capacity and meets the required standards of the Rugby Football League.
