Work Begins On Former Home Of England World Cup Hero

Caddick Construction has commenced work on an £11.5 million Sheffield housing development on a road that was once home to England goalkeeper Gordon Banks, part of the team that won the World Cup in 1966.

Sheffield newspaper The Star reports that work to construct the affordable housing development on Ferrars Road in Tinsley is on schedule, and the 6-acre site, once completed, will comprise 93 properties, including 19 two-bedroom houses, 70 three-bedroom houses and 4 four-bedroom homes.

The development is due to be completed in 2023, and the first phase of homes will be available and released to tenants in the third quarter of 2022. The development will also include landscaped open spaces with ponds and public art.

Richard Greenwood, the director of housing for Caddick Construction, said that the housing market in Sheffield and South Yorkshire is very competitive, and it can feel impossible for first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder.

“Ferrars Road will help to deliver high-quality housing for this market, which will include key workers and low-income families, allowing them to put down permanent roots in the area,” he said.

The properties have been designed by architects Watson Batty, and feature traditional architectural elements on the outside, while the modern interiors will be very energy-efficient.

The development is being funded by Homes England and will ultimately be owned and managed by Together Housing Group on completion.
