Work Begins On York Brain Injury Hospital

Property developer HBD has commenced work on a new brain injury hospital in York, which will be operated by The Disabilities Trust, and is the latest phase of the development at its Chocolate Works scheme, a nine-year regeneration project of the former Terry’s Chocolate Orange Factory.

Plans for the new facility were approved in October last year, securing over 100 jobs, and shoring up the city’s mental health services after the closure of The Retreat, The Disabilities Trust’s former base of operations, the Yorkshire Post reports.

In all, 36 beds will be provided by contractor GMI Construction, as well as a therapeutic garden and courtyards. It’s hoped that the project will be completed by February next year.

Tom Wheldon, the director and head of region at HBD, said: “The unit is an important resource for the city, run by a hugely dedicated and experienced team who have helped hundreds of people, so it’s great to see work getting underway on-site”.

He added that the firm is pleased to be able to support The Disabilities Trust in helping secure its future in the city, and look forward to working with the team as the charity starts its next chapter at the Chocolate Works.

Bill Chidgey, the director of corporate services at The Disabilities Trust, said that seeing work begin on the site marks an exciting milestone for the charity, and they were relieved to have secured the future of the unit.

“We look forward to seeing the plans come to life and becoming part of the fantastic community at the Chocolate Works.”

Andrew Hurcomb, GMI Construction Group’s divisional managing director for Yorkshire, said the firm was ‘exceptionally proud’ to be part of the team delivering the project, which demonstrates a key element in the company’s strategy to support levelling up activity in key sectors such as health.

“It’s fantastic to see a brand-new facility of this quality being developed in York,” he said, adding that the GMI team is working closely with HBD and The Disabilities Trust, demonstrating its responsiveness by mobilising quickly to help get the important project started.

The Disabilities Trust itself provides support for adults with acquired brain injuries or complex physical and learning difficulties, as well as for people with autism. It has been in operation for more than 40 years, supporting around 750 annually as the largest non-profit brain injury service provider in the UK.
