£19m Regeneration Plans Approved For Brighouse

£19m Regeneration Plans Approved For Brighouse

Brighouse in West Yorkshire is set to benefit from a significant new regeneration project after plans received the stamp of approval. The BBC reports that the former mill town will see an investment in five separate projects to make the town more welcoming and attractive to shoppers and new businesses.

The plans were drawn up as part of the government’s ‘Levelling Up’ agenda, and were recently approved by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The proposals will now move to the second phase to lay down more detail as to what each development will include.

There is currently approval for £9m worth of enhancements to retail and leisure facilities in the town, which will see improved public spaces to attract more visitors. £450,000 is pencilled in for a high-tech industry hub, which will focus on developing the use of digital technology for startups and small businesses in the area.

Councillor Sophie Whittaker, co-chair of the Brighouse Town Deal Board, said: “Government approval of these projects is another important milestone for the Brighouse Deal.”

“We are pleased the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities agrees that these plans will make a huge difference to our town and unlock our potential for the future, and we are now moving into a new phase which will see further development of the projects and then, [in 12 months’ time], the start of construction and delivery of our vision.”

In the town centre, £2m will be spent on a new market building which will feature a mixture of permanent and pop-up stalls. A further £6m will be spent on enhancements to the public realm, with better connectivity to the town centre, and a central event space for the use of the local community.

Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Towns, Engagement and Public Health, said: “The go-ahead for the £19.1m funding is a really exciting moment for the future of Brighouse. It’s great national recognition for the Brighouse Deal regeneration plans, and shows confidence in the future of the town.”

She added: “It’s thanks to everyone who has put so much hard work, love and care into the proposals, which fit well with our commitment to see our towns thrive.”

“We have listened to local people’s views throughout, and as we move forward with these plans to make Brighouse an even better place to live, work, do business, visit, connect and get active, there will be more opportunities to engage and input.”

On the periphery of the town, improvements will be made to encourage more outdoor recreation and sporting activity. If the more detailed plans are approved, work could start as soon as 2023, with an expected completion date of 2025.

Brighouse is situated on the River Calder, which provided power for the flour and textile milling industries until the early 20th century. Many of the town’s former mill buildings have now been converted into loft style apartments. The town is noted for its brass band, which was formed in 1881, and it is also home to the rock band Embrace.
