£200m Yorkshire Energy Park Proposed For Hull

A new energy park has been proposed for the former Hedon Aerodrome site near Hull. The £200m development is due to be constructed in phases over the next decade, Hull Live reports. The first images have been released for public viewing, and a new video can also be seen online on the developer’s website.

The scheme has so far been granted approved planning conditions, and is awaiting full sign off before the construction work can begin. The final plans are to be put to the East Riding of Yorkshire’s Council’s Planning Committee in the next few months. The scheme has the full backing of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Claire Harrison, Yorkshire Energy Park Project Director, said: “We have worked in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the statutory agencies for three years to develop a scheme which maximises the benefits for local people, while being sympathetic to its surroundings.”

She added: “Alongside progressing the technical matters, we wanted to capture and share the vision for the park, and really bring to life the positive impacts it will have on our area. The video aims to showcase the range of career opportunities that will be available and the education and research facilities which will work hand in hand with the businesses.”

The site aims to offer training and research facilities, space for local businesses, sports facilities, a disaster recovery suite, and an outdoors materials testing facility. It will also take measures to enhance and improve the surrounding countryside, and protect existing wildlife habitats.

The Hull Daily Mail reports that eventually, around 2,000 people will work at the 212-acre site, and about 120 construction jobs will be created. There will be a focus on clean energy solutions, with the means in place to transition to hydrogen gas in the future. Solar panels and battery storage units will also be installed.

The University of Lincoln has announced plans for an educational partnership with the park, and will have a base on the site for training and research. The University already has interests in the areas of clean energy, sustainable supply chains, energy usage, and climate science.

The scheme will also create apprenticeships and training opportunities, as well as support for new start-ups to get a foothold onto the market. It is anticipated that it will bring over £200m of investment to the region, with 80% of labour selected from the local areas during the construction phase.

A further 590 jobs are expected to be created from indirect sectors, such as technology, transportation, information and communication, finance and insurance, and administrative and support services. Yorkshire Energy Park also say that they will target 80% employment from the local area for long-term jobs.

Regular public consultations are being held through the planning process. The sports facilities will be available to the local community, and footpath and cycle routes in the area will be improved. The local councils are also working closely with Highways England to upgrade the major roads in the area.
