Harrogate Leisure Facilities Undergo Refurbishment

here is set to be a major extension and refurbishment of a leisure centre in Harrogate after the council approved plans for major renovation work.

The Hydro will benefit from a new 400-square-metre fitness suite, an overhaul of its existing gym and leisure facilities, improved reception and café area and an update of its changing rooms.

Councillor Stanley Lumely, cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport for Harrogate Borough Council, and chair of the board of directors at Brimhams Active, said: “Our vision is to create a healthier and more active population that are living longer, more independent and happier lives. And by creating first-class facilities like this we’ll be able to deliver the aims and objectives of Brimhams Active.”

Visitors to the Hydro can also expect to see extensive remodelling to its outside, including a reconfigured car park, bicycle storage area, electric vehicle charging points and landscaping. Solar panels will also be installed, and existing gas boilers will be replaced, while the diving structure will be replaced, following an inspection of the equipment last year.

Meanwhile, the leisure facility in Knaresborough will see the existing pool replaced with a six-lane 25-metre pool and activity pool with flume. There will also be a sauna, steam room, fitness studio, spin studio, café, electric car charging points, bike storage, and modern play area for children.

Incorporating energy-efficient building materials, such as solar panels and air-source heat pumps, the building is expected to achieve the BREEAM accreditation of ‘excellent’ as a minimum.

Harrogate Borough Council has recently unveiled the results of a £1 million investment to transform derelict buildings on Knaresborough High Street. It bought the Grade-II listed properties in 2019 and has spent the last couple of years renovating so they are now ready to be let out or sold.
