Proposal For New Leeds Food Village

Plans to build a new food and drinks centre at Kirkgate Market in Leeds are to be discussed at a meeting of senior council members shortly, Insider Media reports. A consultation exercise has already been carried out, with a largely positive response received from over 2,000 questionnaires.

The new food village would be constructed partly from shipping containers that would be available to rent at competitive prices. The venue would be constructed alongside existing trading facilities. 91% of respondents in the survey said that they would be either likely or very likely to use the new food market.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, culture and education, explained that the council owned site would be tenured to private operators, and designed to enhance the current indoor and outdoor markets.

Cllr Pryor commented: “We are hugely proud of both Leeds Kirkgate Market’s history and the important part it continues to play in local life, with the council’s multimillion-pound investment in the site during recent years underlining our determination to ensure it remains one of the jewels in the city’s retail crown.”

He added: “Given the special place it holds in so many people’s affections, we are conscious that any new additions to the market must be handled sensitively, and must also complement and enhance its existing offer.”

“That is why we carried out the consultation exercise on the proposals, with the results being carefully analysed and used to shape the next steps options that will be considered by executive board.

“Should these next steps be approved, then we will continue to engage with all parties – including traders, shoppers and stakeholders – as we gauge the level of operator interest in the proposals.”

Meanwhile, work has begun on a new housing development in Halton Moor, Leeds. Developers Keepmoat are constructing 100 new houses on the site near Rathmore Road as part of the Leeds City Council Brownfield Land Programme, Insider Media reports.

Michael Orgill, regional managing director at Keepmoat, said: “We are delighted to have started construction at our Synergy development in Leeds and can’t wait to deliver these new homes for potential homebuyers in the area.”

He added: “As this is the last development to be built as part of the Leeds Brownfield Land Programme, we are incredibly proud of what we have already achieved in East Leeds for residents here.”

A percentage of the two, three and four bedroom properties will be available at affordable rates through social rent or shared ownership schemes. The Brownfield Land Programme will eventually deliver over 1,000 new homes at sites across East Leeds.
