The UK government has announced that £50m from the Levelling up Fund has been awarded to the Eden Project North, which is to be built in Morecambe. The eco-tourist attraction is expected to bring in new business to the seaside resort on the Lancashire coast.
Eden Project North will be based on the distinctive pavilion style that forms the Eden Project Cornwall. A further £50m to complete the project will be provided by the local councils and private investment, the BBC reports.
Meanwhile, Blackpool has been awarded £40m for a new ‘multiversity’, which is described as a carbon neutral university campus. The town of Preston will benefit from 320m of investment to improve public parks and replace a closed tram bridge, and Blackburn and Darwen will receive £20m to upgrade infrastructure.
Responding to the news about the Eden Project North funding, Leader of the Shadow Authority for Westmorland and Furness Council Councillor Jonathan Brook said: “This is fantastic news and I am very pleased to see that the Government has finally backed the ambitions of Eden Project Morecambe.”
He added: “It will be a major boost to communities right around Morecambe Bay and beyond. Here in Westmorland and Furness we recognise the significance of this project and can see the obvious synergies with our own priorities and the opportunities for our area to benefit from the development in Morecambe.”
It is expected that the new tourist attraction will boost the local economy and create new jobs for the area. Local business owners and residents have reacted positively to the news, with restaurant owner Magda Szcerba commenting: “The town is lovely, the views are incredible and it’s just what it needs – more people, more tourists.”
She added: “It could be a huge success – we need more people because it’s just a seasonal town.”
Councillor Jonathan Brook added: “Eden Project Morecambe has always been about connecting people with the significant natural environment of Morecambe Bay, enhancing wellbeing and delivering an economic boost to the whole area.”
“In our own Council Plan, which was adopted just before Christmas, we have key priorities around working to tackle environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss, improving and enhancing the health and wellbeing of our communities and growing a thriving economy.”
“Eden Project Morecambe is a wonderful complement to these aims and objectives and we see some obvious links with our own natural environment visitor attractions, including some of the most beautiful parts of the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage site, areas of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the wonderful nature reserves of the Furness peninsula.”
“It will also connect well with other Morecambe Bay projects such as the work to restore the historic lido and promenade at Grange, the outdoor centre at Earnse Bay as part of the ‘BrilliantBarrow’ Town Deal and Morecambe Bay Partnership’s proposal to create a new cycling and walking route across the viaduct between Arnside and Grange.”
Work on the project is due to begin shortly, and it is scheduled to open in 2024.
