26 New Homes Planned For Castle Howard Estate

A planning application has been submitted for the development of 26 new residences on the Balk site of the Castle Howard estate in Slingsby. Insider Media reports that the plans are part of a wider long-term master plan for the future management of the estate.

The estate near Malton in North Yorkshire is the site of one of the largest stately homes in Europe. Castle Howard is not a castle but a 145-room house that was first constructed in 1699, and continued to be added to for over a century. It is thought that a fortified structure once stood in the grounds, hence the name.

The house was partially destroyed in a fire in 1940, and the restoration process has been very gradual since then. It is still the formal residence of the Carlise branch of the Howard family and comprises of several Grade I and II listed structures. There is an estimated £50m worth of restoration work still needed on the 9,000 acre estate.

The estate is open to the public, with over 270,000 visitors every year. It is also a popular location for filming and has starred in adaptations of the Evelyn Waugh novel Brideshead Revisited, and episodes of the hit TV series Bridgerton and Victoria.

Jasper Hasell, the Castle Howard Estate chief executive, said: "It is hugely important that the plans we have submitted for the Balk site demonstrate our long-term commitment to purposeful development and the key themes laid out in our masterplan.

“We believe that what we have developed with Adam Architecture does just that, featuring high-quality and sustainable design that is sympathetic to the character of Slingsby and will enhance village life.”

"With a range of tenures and 35 per cent of the development being affordable, Castle Howard is uniquely placed to deliver a development of this type, ensuring future homes for local people and a sustainable future for the estate."

In 2022, the Castle Howard Estate laid out its ‘Purposeful Development Vision’ to ensure the continuing survival of the heritage site. In statement on its website, it said:

“Against a background of rising restoration costs, the impact of COVID-19, the climate and biodiversity emergencies, and a lack of rural housing and services, 2022 represents a watershed moment in the Estate’s long history.”

“There is now an exciting and nationally important opportunity to redefine the role that an Estate like Castle Howard can play in rural regeneration.”

Among the plan’s ambitions are providing sustainable and affordable housing for the local community, and providing employment opportunities and services for the surrounding villages.

The restoration of the site will also continue, and in the process a national centre of excellence for training and in traditional crafts and skills will be created. Work will also be undertaken to improve land management practices and increase the biodiversity of the site. More green spaces will also be opened up for public access.
