New Helipad For Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Sheffield Children’s Hospital is set to benefit from a new helipad to enable air ambulances to land on the roof of the building. The BBC reports that planning permission has been granted for a £6m landing zone to be built as an alternative to the current Weston Park site.

The new helipad will help to ensure patient privacy, be of exclusive use to the hospital, and enable the easier and quicker transfer of patients to the main hospital building. The Children’s Hospital Charity is carrying out a fundraising campaign on behalf of the scheme, and a spokesman said they were close to reaching their target.

Chief Operating Officer at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Craig Radford told the BBC that receiving planning permission was "fantastic news for our helipad project".

Mr Radford added: “We strive to provide the best care for our children and young people and the creation of a helipad with help from The Children’s Hospital Charity and the County Air Ambulance HELP appeal, is one of the ways we’re continuing to improve the care we provide.”

"When patients need to access emergency care, we need to move fast while giving patients the privacy they need, and this is the one time we don’t want children waiting to cross the road.”

Sheffield Children’s Hospital is only one of five dedicated Major Trauma Centres in England, offering the best chance of survival for major trauma patients under the age of 16. It is operational 24/7, but the current landing facility in the public Weston Park is only usable during daylight hours.

It is also unavailable for 30 days of the year when public events are being held. Furthermore, patients have to be transferred across the busy A57, causing delays in time-critical situations. The new helipad will be floodlit during takeoff and landing, and also kept ice-free during the winter months.

Meanwhile, a new government fund has been made available to improve the local environment and boost the economy of North Yorkshire. The County Council website explains that the £16.9 million North Yorkshire UK Shared Prosperity Fund Investment Plan has been approved by central government, with a promised further £5.4 million to follow.

The local government is inviting community groups, businesses, and cultural and voluntary sector organisations to apply for the funding, which will be available during the 2024/25 financial year.

Council leader, Cllr Carl Les, said: “Communities across our county face diverse challenges, and each also presents its unique opportunities. This funding application invitation offers a chance for local organisations who understand and live with the challenges facing their towns and villages to come forward with solutions.”

He added: “We want to see this fund used to maximum effect to enable communities to build the foundations for their own economic development, to help businesses to thrive and to reduce the barriers people of any age might face in entering and progressing in work or education.”
