New Town Centre Location For Scunthorpe Police Station

A new police station is set to be built in Scunthorpe town centre to replace the existing station on Corporation Road. The Grimsby Telegraph reports that the current station is no longer fit for purpose as a working space for police officers and staff, or for the use of the public.

A new prospective site on Scunthorpe High Street is currently undergoing evaluation. The £21m funding for the new station has been secured from the Towns Fund Board, which is part of the government’s Levelling Up scheme that was announced in 2019. 101 towns across England have been invited to develop proposals for the scheme.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We are working with a range of partners to create a new, vibrant town centre – attracting people in for many different reasons.”

He added: “Having a centrally located police station will be a really important element of this – many residents have told us that a stronger and more visible police presence in the centre of town would be welcomed. It is great news to be working with the police and crime commissioner towards making this vision a reality.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Johnathan Evison commented: “In recent years there has been considerable investment in modernising the Humberside Police estate.”

“The new building at Melton has upgraded the police contact centre to one of the best in the country and the custody suite at Birchin Way, in Grimsby, is an outstanding example of a modern facility, both buildings reflect the outstanding grading recently given to the force by His Majesty’s Inspectorate.”

“Scunthorpe Police Station has served the town well for decades but does not reflect the high standard and working environment required by a police force in the 21st Century.

“I’m pleased to be working with North Lincolnshire Council to agree a site in Scunthorpe town centre to build this new police station and I will make further announcements once a plan has been finalised.”

Scunthorpe is a town with a rich industrial heritage, but it has suffered economic decline in recent decades. Under the new Town Investment Plan, councillors have set out a new long-term strategy for industrial diversification and regeneration. It aims to establish Scunthorpe as a centre for excellence in education, innovation and culture.

Holly Mumby-Croft, MP for Scunthorpe and vice chair of the Towns Fund Board, said: “The investment in Scunthorpe continues at pace. This announcement is the latest part of a number of projects designed to create a new, more vibrant future for the town centre.”

She added: “Using the Towns Fund cash – some £21m from Government – we have delivered ultrafast broadband, will create a new science and technology centre for children and families and have built a new park and gardens.”

The town is focussing on building a new visitor economy and establishing a new sustainable and high quality business quarter.
