Redevelopment Continues Of Historic Huddersfield Mill

A historic mill complex in Huddersfield continues to undergo redevelopment works, The Business Desk reports. The Globe is located on the canalside at Slaithwaite, and is a familiar local landmark. It is being renovated to create 80,000 sq ft of mixed use space, with 6,000 ft of Grade A workspace already completed.

The original mills were built in 1887-9 by the Globe Worsted Company of Slaithwaite who were textile manufacturers. As the textile industry declined during the late twentieth century, the company eventually went into administration and the mills were closed in 2004.

The complex was purchased by a private developer and is being rennovated by a partnership between the University of Huddersfield, Hartley Property Trust and Kirklees Council into mixed use spaces.

Several successful occupancies of the main two five-storey buildings have already been completed. The Colne Valley Group Practice and pharmacy have moved into the first floor, and Thornton & Ross, the pharmaceutical and healthcare company, have made The Globe their headquarters.

Chris Smith, a spokesman for Hartley Property Trust said, “We are pleased to complete the latest phase of a comprehensive restoration and redevelopment plan for The Globe.”

“These buildings are an important part of our regional heritage and our investment has delivered new, highly efficient and modern workspace with the important carbon benefits of repurposing buildings.”

He added: “Kirklees is home to 14,000+ businesses with core sectors including advanced manufacturing and precision engineering, textiles, pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, and creative and digital industries.”

“It was recently named the second best place in the UK to set up and run a business and we believe that The Globe is offering the right space at the right time.”

The redevelopment also includes a state of the art innovation centre, offices, retail outlets, and laboratory space.

Meanwhile, a new workspace facility has been launched at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Insider Media reports. The facility is operated by Blueprint Workspace, who are owned by Scarborough Group International (SGI). It will provide workspace for organisations in the sport, health or wellbeing sector.

Rachel Vickers, senior commercial manager at SGI, said: "A typical life cycle of a innovation-led start-up in terms of its space requirements usually starts with one or two desks and can very quickly ramp up to an entire floor, which is why flexibility is key.

"By providing a high-quality, managed environment that is designed specifically to help early-stage businesses in the sport, health and wellbeing sectors innovate, collaborate and grow, we're supporting the wider Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park ecosystem."

Cllr Mazher Iqbal added: "When the Council set out its vision for the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park several years ago we hoped to create a space that brought together education, innovation and collaboration and we're so pleased to see that becoming a reality.”

The launch of this new mixed workspace is another fantastic step and highlights the city's commitment to supporting businesses of all sizes."

The facility aims to attract new and emerging businesses in the local area, and will be supported by a concierge reception area.
