Proposals to redevelop the centre of Huddersfield have been approved by the strategic planning committee of Kirklees Council. Insider Media reports that the £210m scheme aims to build a new ‘cultural heart’ in the town centre, beginning with the refurbishment of the historic Grade II listed Queensgate Market.
The plans include the creation of a new food hall and library with an event space on the upper floor. A new outdoor public square will also be built, which will be overlooked by a terrace from the library building.
Councillor Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said: "Today is a significant milestone for the future of Huddersfield town centre. Our Cultural Heart project is a transformational scheme that will, alongside our wider Huddersfield Blueprint plans, provide a huge boost to our local economy and existing businesses.”
He continued: “The Cultural Heart is all about delivering genuine long-term community assets, where friends and families can gather, relax and socialise. We are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis and we understand that times are challenging right now for many.”
"This reinforces our ambition to grow our town centre offer and give people more reasons to visit and spend time here. The public square, food hall, museum and library will be amazing new spaces that provide free and low-cost activities – ultimately bringing our diverse community closer together."
It is anticipated that work will begin in spring 2024, with a completion date of 2026. Further plans include a new multi-purpose live entertainment venue and car park, and a new park and museum and gallery. A consortium of designers and developers will be involved with the project.
Meanwhile, the former House of Fraser building in Huddersfield is set to be transformed into a cinema with additional leisure units, according to Insider Media. The building is located in the Kingsgate Centre, and will form part of the ‘cultural heart’ makeover of the town.
Councillor Graham Turner, cabinet member for regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: "We are committed to helping businesses thrive in Kirklees and I am delighted that the council has worked very closely with WD Kingsgate to help them to deliver this scheme.
"Kingsgate is a key destination within the town centre, and the redevelopment will complement the existing shops and become an important family-friendly leisure destination.
"The developer's vision for the project is in line with our own Blueprint ambitions for the town centre and will help create the perfect mix of retail, culture and leisure."
Peter Everest, of WD Kingsgate, added: "I am grateful for the council's support in delivering this scheme. We are excited about bringing a high-quality cinema in to Huddersfield town centre alongside a variety of other food and leisure outlets.
"Our redeveloped centre will create a new destination within the town centre that gives the opportunity to shop, eat and see the latest films all within a stone's throw of the other planned town centre developments."
The cinema will be run by The Light group, who already manage 12 cinema complexes across the UK.
